The “One-Another”  of a Godly Marriage

After 49 years of marriage, Carol and I would like to share a little Biblical advice on how to make it work.

I am going to use American English to make this more understandable in its whole

The New Living Translation is a modern day Paraphrase of scripture,

a study tool..in simpler English.. of scripture..not scripture..

A Paraphrase is a   rewording of something written or spoken by someone else. It is meant to express the meaning of   something written or spoken  using different words,   to achieve greater clarity.

Living in the Light as a married Christian..

Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us[a] and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.

Let there be no sexual immorality, impurity, or greed among you. Such sins have no place among God’s people. Obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes—these are not for you. Instead, let there be thankfulness to God. You can be sure that no immoral, impure, or greedy person will inherit the Kingdom of Christ and of God. For a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world.

Don’t be fooled by those who try to excuse these sins, for the anger of God will fall on all who disobey him. Don’t participate in the things these people do. For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light! For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true.

10 Carefully determine what pleases the Lord. 11 Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, expose them. 12 It is shameful even to talk about the things that ungodly people do in secret…………………….

Living by the Spirit’s Power

15 So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. 16 Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. 17 Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do. 18 Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit, 19 singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts. 20 And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Spirit-Guided Relationships: Wives and Husbands

21 And further, submit to one another [as marriage partners] out of reverence for Christ.

22 For wives, this means submit to your husbands as to the Lord. 23 For a husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head of the church. He is the Savior of his body, the church. 24 As the church submits to Christ, so you wives should submit to your husbands in everything.

25 For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her 26 to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s word.[b]27 He did this to present her to himself as a glorious church without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Instead, she will be holy and without fault. 28 In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as they love their own bodies. For a man who loves his wife actually shows love for himself. 29 No one hates his own body but feeds and cares for it, just as Christ cares for the church. 30 And we are members of his body.

31 As the Scriptures say, “A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.”[c] 32 This is a great mystery, but it is an illustration of the way Christ and the church are one. 33 So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

The key is in how you treat “one-another.”

If these scriptures talk of love within the church, how much more so should they be part of a Christian  marriage?

Mark 9:50 Salt is good, but if the salt loses its flavor, how will you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace with ONE ANOTHER.”

John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give to you, that you love ONE ANOTHER; as I have loved you, that you also love ONE ANOTHER. “By this all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for ONE ANOTHER.”

John 15:12-13 This is My commandment, that you love ONE ANOTHER as I have loved you. “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.

Rom 16:16 Greet ONE ANOTHER with a holy kiss.

1 Cor 11:33 Therefore, my brethren, when you come together to eat, wait for ONE ANOTHER.

1 Cor 12:25-26 …that there should be no schism in the body, but that the members should have the same care for ONE ANOTHER. And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.

2 Cor 13:12 Greet ONE ANOTHER with a holy kiss.

Eph 4:32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ forgave you.

Eph 5:19-21 speaking to ONE ANOTHER in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to ONE ANOTHER in the fear of God.

1Thes 4:18 Therefore comfort ONE ANOTHER …

1 Peter 3:8-9 New Living Translation (NLT) Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters.[a] Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude.Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will grant you his blessing.

1 Pet 4:8-9 And above all things have fervent love for ONE ANOTHER, for “love will cover a multitude of sins.”  Be hospitable to ONE ANOTHER without grumbling.

1 Pet 4:10 As each one has received a gift, minister it to ONE ANOTHER, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

1 Pet 5:5 … Yes, all of you be submissive to ONE ANOTHER, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

And a Few others thrown in from the ‘husband’ perspective….

The New Testament mentions wives over 100 times and husbands just about 35 times, so we men need to be taught a bit more about them then they do about us???

Eph 5:33 Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

1 Cor 7:3 Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise also the wife to her husband.
